Is is wrong to get fired because death in the family?

I just wanted to get off for a couple hours, just to help with the furneral arrangements, and my boss would not let me get off. I told him i needed some time, but he said he did not care. If i did not come in, he said that i will have to find me another job. I did not come in because it really hurt me. This is my children's granddad. Did I do the right thing?
