Why is the American government so afraid of Marijuana?

really.. why the heck? its not even harmful to anyone.. in amsterdam everyone does it and its not know to be harmful like alcohol.. when vaporized its not even nearly as bad as cigarettes.. so what gives? why are americans so afraid of it?
