How do I make him understand that I'm different or at least see things differently?

Those are the same type of things I feel when girls are intrested in me as a guy and no I do not understand this. I would never date anyone like what he is "supposedly" going after. Hope this helps for some reason a lot of guys and girls for that matter seem very attracted to the wrong thing. This is the age old question I wish I could answer but can't hope this helps.
